The Quinta da Costa de Baixo is situated along the right bank of the Douro River, half way between Régua and Pinhão, near the mouth of the Ceira River. The Estate, having always belonged to the region marked for the production of Port wine, possesses a mark from the time of the Demarcation made by the Marquis of Pombal in 1758, with the usual inscription "FEITORIA" to which the name "MELO" is joined.

This last reference probably refers to the Quinta do Melo, an Estate marked on the Baron of Forrester's map, which in the meantime was incorporated into the Quinta da Costa de Baixo.

The Quinta da Costa de Baixo became property of the Bulas Cruz Family in 1951, having formerly belonged to Emília Magalhães de Brito Ermida. In 1990, the actual proprietors acquired the Quinta da Foz Ceira, which is located where the Douro River meets the Ceira, thus incorporating the agricultural exploration of this new Estate.

The cultivated casts are the ones traditionally used in the region, with the red casts; Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão being the predominant. The Estate's odd location, on the right bank of the Douro River, having most of its sun exposure from the south and west, allows the production of high quality wines. According to an ancient saying: the best wines of the Douro Region were those, which heard the creak of the espadela

(an espadela is the long helm used to navigate the traditional Rabelo boats of the Douro River). Thus implying this saying to the proximity of the Douro River.

Over the Estate's ancient gate, lies an enormous granite beam, where the inscription "1886" can be read. There is also a storehouse, which is nearly 50 meters long and was built in 1840.
Furthermore, the Estate possesses a threshing floor, which goes back to the time when filoxera (a vineyard disease) destroyed the vineyards. As an alternative, the production of cereals was launched.

Among the wines that the Quinta da Costa de Baixo has introduced to the market, many consider the harvest LBV - 94, to be the best Port wine ever produced in the Douro Region.
